What do you do when that edgy, cool as shit menswear brand, designed by a black dude, introduces womenswear during New York Fashion Week? You freak. That’s what the hell you do. I’m freaking. I’m fucking freaking.
Pyer Moss Spring 2016 Debuts Womenswear
Wayment. Hold up. When did this happen? I’ve been out of the loop. Clearly. Because I had no inkling that Kerby Jean-Raymond, the brain behind Pyer Moss, was dabbling, let alone launching a full on womenswear collection for Spring. Shame on me. I need to get it together.
While I gather myself, I’m admiring the female counterpart that Kerby has created to accompany the Pyer Moss man. I always find it interesting when a menswear label ventures into womenswear. Will the designer get it right? Will they capture the essence of a woman but still be able to tie their designs back to what the core brand represents? Hell, will it even look good? In this case it does. It really does.
What does it for me are the clean lines and clear vision that birthed the Pyer Moss woman. She’s edgy like her man but with feminine silhouettes despite not a single body con dress being included. Black and white dominated the color story with shades of gray and pops of red and yellow. A beige color story also proved to be pleasing. Pants were tailored to perfection and leather jackets were impeccable as per usual.
In true form, the designer used the opportunity to bring attention to the state of black lives in America. Last season, Jean-Raymond wore this t-shirt to his Spring 2015 menswear presentation. He extended the sentiment of his t-shirt (which I gladly got a chance to own myself) with a video showcasing the police brutality that has plagued the black community.
Kerby himself has made it known that he was a victim of numerous stop and frisks at the hands of the NYPD as a teenager. The unrest and unsettling relationship between the black community and the police department is one that he directly relates to. Fashion is a way to express and address the issues on a creative platform. Props to Kerby for taking a stand.
